About the Game:

Alleys is an adventure experience in which the player explores a theme park world full of quaint alleys that would fit perfectly in small towns in the English countryside. The gameplay is simple, with fewer of the complicated elements often found in puzzle games. All the player needs to do is to search for passageways, gather resources, and get immersed in the exquisite graphics and noir atmosphere. The player is free to choose where to go and can solve puzzles in any order to escape.

Background Story of Game:

Alleys is a large-scale escape room hosted by a theme park, and the player is a tourist who has decided to take part in the escape experience. The player wanders through a fictional old English-style town, collects resources, solves puzzles, and overcomes obstacles to gradually discover the backstory woven throughout the alleys. In the end, the player finds the exit gate and escapes.

Main Features:
1. Alleys Exploration

The players must find the way through complicated alleys, buildings, and sewers.

2. Check in to Proceed

Accumulate points by activating the check-in stations found in new locations. Certain areas require a specific number of points to enter.

3. Freely Choose Your Route

Alleys is a non-linear adventure puzzle game with no predetermined route. The player is free to explore and can escape the game as long as the conditions required to open the town exit gate are fulfilled.

4. Collect Resources

Player decides how to use the keys and other resources collected in the game. The decisions the player makes will affect the difficulty of the game.

5. Solve Riddle on Tool Cards

Every Tool Card is its own little riddle. Figure out the meaning of the illustration to find out what the card can be used for.

6. Simple Controls

No need for virtual controllers—just swipe and tap to easily move around and interact with items.

About the Developer:

Alleys is a solo project developed by Shi-Chi Shen. It is also his debut creation. Currently based in Taipei, Shen used to run a design workshop, providing website and graphic design services for companies and other clients. He later switched career paths and became an indie game developer, spurred on by his passion for game development.
To create Alleys, Shen tried his hand at programming and learned to use 3D software. He even composed the sound effects! After a year and a half of development time, Alleys is now in the beta and promotional stage.

Q&A:
Why you chose to do an escape room based on alleys?

At the start of development, I knew this would be a puzzle game. To make it fun for everyone, I try to look for the simplest source of a sense of achievement, which is exploring the unknown and enjoying the surprises of discovering new scenes and things. Whether you are good at solving puzzles or not, you can find your way through simple observation and attempts. This reminds me of my childhood adventures near my home; I loved the sense of surprise I’d experience when I found a dark alley that would take me to a place I had never been before. That’s why I developed the game based on alleyways, so that even players who are unfamiliar with puzzle games can experience the joy of exploration.

About the backstory that the players will discover as they play the game?

I hope to give players a puzzle-solving environment where they can experience mysterious adventures but also feel safe, so I set the game story in a theme park. Alleys is an adventure experience organized by the theme park. The players can feel like they are visitors who have come to take part in an escape game challenge.

But there is another storyline. While the players challenge themselves in the escape-game, they can piece together a simple story designed for it by the theme park. Alleys is like an adventure ride at Disneyland that you can get on simply to enjoy the atmosphere but also experience on the story told around you. In the game, the players will discover a ghost town, where all residents have been evacuated due to the investigation of a big murder case. Since the the game does not set a predetermined route for the escape, putting the story together is not essential to beating the game; however, when the players try to understand the story, they will find out how and why the murder happened, which may lead them to a secret alternative ending.

What was your inspiration for developing the game?

I knew from the beginning that my first game would be a puzzle game, because designing a puzzle game brings me even more joy than playing one does. The first time puzzle games appealed to me was when I played Myst, a classic in the puzzle solving genre. That game made me realize that simple puzzle solving could become a popular game genre, and it also gave me the idea to make puzzle games.

Still, the element of deductive reasoning required in puzzle games keeps many players from trying, so I want to make a game that focuses on experience, with puzzles that the players can solve by merely collecting resources and figuring out simple associations. Alleys can still be challenging, though. When players get a deeper understanding of the game setting, they can try to find a faster or more efficient way to beat the game.

《Alleys 巷弄探險》希望帶給玩家一個像是主題樂園般單純的探險體驗,並以英式風格的小鎮巷弄為場景主題。在遊戲中,簡化了一般解謎遊戲的複雜元素,玩家可以專注在搜集資源與尋找通道上,但同時又可以感受到精緻的美術設計,及偵探小說般的場景氛圍,遊戲過程將在玩家自由選擇的解謎方向下進行,最後找到逃出遊戲的方法。

遊戲故事:

在遊戲故事中,《Alleys 巷弄探險》是一套主題樂園所推出的遊樂設施,像是一個巨型的密室逃脫遊戲,玩家將扮演前來挑戰的遊客,在一個虛構的英式風格舊城鎮中探險,搜集資源,解開關卡障礙,逐步發現小巷裡的故事,並最後打開出口大門離開遊戲。

1.巷弄主題

在連結複雜的巷弄、建築和下水道中尋找隱藏的通道。

2.啟動打卡機

啟動在新地點發現的打卡機來累積打卡分數,獲得進入部份區域的許可。

關於作者:

《Alleys - 巷弄探險》是由作者沈士棋一個人獨立開發的遊戲,也是他的第一款遊戲作品,作者現居住在台北,過去幾年在台灣經營設計工作室,為公司、團體提供網站及平面設計的服務,後來因為對遊戲開發的熱愛,決定踏入獨立遊戲開發的領域。

為了打造《Alleys - 巷弄探險》,作者初次嘗試自己寫程式,及學習3D軟體,並為遊戲配上音效,在超過一年半的開發時間後,在今年初開始進行測試及宣傳。

Q&A:
為何選擇把遊戲特色建立在巷弄上?

最初要開發這款遊戲就知道它會是一款解謎遊戲,為了讓更多人可以享受解謎遊戲的樂趣,我試著去尋找一種最單純的成就感來源,就是探索未知,發現新場景、新事物所帶來的樂趣,無論你擅不擅長解謎,你都可以透過簡單的觀察與嘗試找到前進的道路,這讓我想到小時候在家附近探險,當我發現一條可以彎進去的暗巷或是防火巷,而可以來到一個之前沒去過的地方,我會覺得相當驚奇、有趣,因此我把遊戲的主題建立在巷弄上,就算是不常玩解謎遊戲的玩家,也可以簡單地體驗到探索的樂趣。

玩家會發現怎麼樣的故事?

我想給玩家一個可以體驗神祕氣氛,但同時可以感到安全的解謎環境,所以我把故事背景設定成主題樂園,《巷弄探險》就是主題樂園所推出的冒險設施,玩家可以感受到這是一個虛構的場景,他們像是遊客,是來這裡挑戰這個逃脫遊戲。

但是在故事中也存在著另一個故事,玩家在挑戰這個設施的同時,也可以拼湊出一個由主題樂園所為它設計的簡單故事,這就像是迪士尼樂園裡的冒險設施,你可以只是單純坐著列車進去感受氣氛,但也可以在過程中專注在場景訴說的故事。遊戲中,玩家將發現一個無人的小鎮,因為發生一件重大的兇殺案,為了配合調查,所有人都被撤離。由於這個遊戲沒有固定的解謎路線,拼湊故事也不是破關的必要條件,但是當玩家試著去了解故事,他將發現兇殺案的發生過程與原因,這可能會讓玩家走上另一個隱藏的結局。

什麼啟發了這款遊戲的開發?

我從一開始就知道我的第一款遊戲將是解謎遊戲,因為設計解謎遊戲所為我帶來的樂趣大於自己去玩,第一次深受解謎遊戲吸引是因為我玩了解謎遊戲中的經典「Myst」,這讓我了解到原來單純的解謎就可以成為一種受歡迎的遊戲類型,也讓我開始有了製作解謎遊戲的念頭。

不過因為解謎遊戲有太多推理成份,這讓很多玩家不願嘗試,因此我希望可以做一款著重在體驗和簡單聯想的解謎遊戲,玩家只要透過搜集資源、使用資源,加上找出關聯性,便可以完成遊戲,但同時又有進一步挑戰的空間,在玩家更了解遊戲裡的配置後,可以找到更快或更省資源的方式過關。

概要:

《Alleys - 路地探索》は、英国風の小さな町の路地を模したテーマパークを舞台とし、シンプルな探検体験を提供します。一般的な謎解きゲームの要素を簡素化しているので、プレイヤーはアイテム集めと道を探すことに集中することができます。同時にゲームを進める中で、美術デザインと推理小説の雰囲気を楽しむことが出来ます。プレイヤーは自由な選択でゲームを進め謎を解き、最後にはゲームからの脱出方法を探し出すことになります。

ゲームのストーリー:

ゲームのストーリー中、《Alleys - 路地探索》はテーマパーク内にある巨大な密室脱出ゲームのようなアトラクションをさします。プレイヤーは開園前に挑戦者で、パーク内に作られた英国風の古い城下町を探検し、道具を集め、謎を解き、関門をクリアしていくなかで、徐々に路地に隠されたストーリーを発見していきます。最後にはメインゲートの鍵を開け、ゲームから脱出します。

主な特徴:
1.路地探索

複雑につながる路地、建物、下水道の中に隠された財宝への道を探る。

2.チェックインステーションの起動

新しい場所で発見したチェックインステーションを起動し、チェックインポイントを貯めると、特定のエリアに入ることができる。

3.自由なルート選択

謎解きには決められたルートはなく、ノンリニア(non-linear)謎解き冒険ゲームである。町のメインゲートを開く条件をクリアすることで、ゲームから脱出できる。

4.アイテム集め

集めた鍵やその他のアイテムの使い方や、鍵を開けるドアの選択は自由に決定できる。その選択によってゲームの難易度が異なる。

5.カードに秘められた謎を解く

全ての道具カードに簡単な謎が隠されている。カードに描かれた絵を理解することでその特殊な用法を見つけることができる。

6.シンプルな操作

バーチャルコントローラーは必要なく、画面のスワイプとタップだけで移動やツール使用が可能。

開発者について:

《Alleys - 路地探索》は開発者である沈士棋(シェン・シーチー)が単独開発したゲームで、彼の最初のゲーム作品でもある。現在は台北在住で、過去には台湾企業のデザイン室に勤務し、ホームページ作成及びグラフィックデザインに従事。その後、ゲーム開発への情熱のためインディースでのゲーム開発領域に足を踏み入れた。

《Alleys - 路地探索》の製作にあたり、初めてプログラミングに着手、また3Dソフトウェアやゲーム中の音楽についても学ぶ。1年半以上に及ぶ開発の後、本年よりテストの実施及び宣伝を開始した。
